Ten years ago a bunch of us studly Web entrepreneurs loaded up the Nissan truck and sped off from New Mexico to Los Angeles to crash SIGGRAPH and as many industry parties as we could. The parties sucked, as did most of the “futuristic” software and games being promoted. There were definately some novel games, but the problem was, and remains, good content. I recall joking that game designers, and hence games, would benefit greatly by going to Mexico and eating magic mushrooms on top of a Mayan pyramid. Apparently no one has taken my advice, but I do see from the above promotions video that this year’s (2007) event will feature far more advanced technology. A lot of it seems pretty cool, but I wonder if any of these concepts really make our lives better. Seems to me that the money could be better spent throwing a big party in… you guessed it… Mexico. Imagine the world changing possiblities when people get together and have a little physical contact and fun. Nothing like the good ol’ fashioned technology of play (and nature).
