I'm ready to call bullshit on 60 Minutes, the wealth of books that hold a similar position (Generation Me is a good example), and blog posts, like the one in Stay Fee!, that echo it and try to rearticulate it.

Each successive generation is getting smarter. Granted, there are obvious social implosions going on... 80's-style consumerism and mindless marketing dying their deserved deaths... but the literature that bashes my generation, and the decade shortly following mine, are a fantastic excuse for the elders to attack and disparage the people who are about to replace them.

Just look at the people presenting. They're all old, ideologically dated business and media people. They talk about "all our gadgets" like they're scared of cell phones, and the way they say "almost an extension of their bodies," it sounds like a thoughtful teenager mentioned Marshall McLuhan to a bewildered scriptwriter and it worked its way into the narration. This is an idea we've known about since Middle School, and it's a refrain we've heard since... well, probably throughout the whole history of civilization. "Damn young people! There's just no quality any more." It's the voice of insecurity, echoing from a vanishing generation.

I'm not even going to mention how many dated truisms and antagonistic generalizations are inherent in the generation-bashing vanguard. I think I'll write about it in my own blog instead.

It drives me fucking CRAZY.
