These videos are certainly sensational and have the right intention at heart, which is to make more concrete the horrors of industrialized state violence and the holocaust. Yet there is something that strikes me as a bit off about the scenarios in these videos. It gives the impression that there is something random, sudden and unexpected about genocide, yet the reality is that it is often based on observable patterns against targeted populations. Usually this is not something out of the blue, but well planned with at least some sense of who the victims might be. Is this a warning about the future, or a threat to remember the past? Keep in mind that such a reality was indeed perpetrated by the US government against Native Americans, so if you want a cogent and tangible example of the threat of this kind of reality to “us,” go to the Rez and talk to a few elders.
In spirit, though, it would be good for us to remember that people on both sides of the conflict have brothers, wives, sons and daughters and domestic lives that would appear “normal.” Somehow, somewhere, though, there are numerous technocrats, strategists and military planners who remain disconnected from the reality that they foresee for others, playing with humanity like some kind of toy to test theories and to justify belief. Supporting them are numerous systems of economics and politics we consider rational. One hopes that our collective intelligence is smarter than them, and the scenarios played out in these MTV videos will remain in the realm of fantasy.

Man! I’m not generally a fearful person, but those videos both scared me so much that I cried. Perhaps I’m a total media wimp and it’s a good thing that I assiduously avoid watching TV and most films these days. But it’s probably really due to the fact that being put on a boxcar has been my greatest fear since I was 9 and read The Diary of Anne Frank. I agree with you in that I don’t think these things come out of the blue, and that if one was to be among the victims that one would have gotten a fair idea as to what was up - but that’s where the fear comes in. That “this time” it will be different, that it will be so well planned that there will be no warning. Ugh. Creepy thoughts for a Monday morning in NY. Good though, as well, and definitely something to examine. Thanks, bro.
J.Bro - You speak to the power of media, and hence its razor’s edge of being both dangerous and enlightening. As a highly manipulative medium, film/TV can heighten our emotions. This is precisely why the Nazi’s saw film as so important to their program. Hitler’s architect told a NYT report many years later that if he had TV Hitler would have “gone all the way.” I’m not sure if that is true, because propaganda is only temporarily effective since it always has to compete with reality, and fortunately reality is much better at asserting itself than the realm of images (contrary to what French theorists say). Furthermore, by reducing everything to images, which are disposable, the ideas themselves become a double-edged sword because the claim authenticity but don’t match what people are actually experience (think “mission accomplished” banner). The problem with our conditioning is that if something is made to look real and authentic, i.e. most professionally made media, our impulse is to trust it because it looks so convincing and authentic. But even if these ads are ultimately ambiguous, their provocative nature inspires discussion, and that is much more interesting than what a typical ad does. It might also be helpful to know that the bill was voted on by the Senate during a session generally used to address simple, “no-contest” legislation. However, the ramifications of a bill like this are far reaching and could be extremely dangerous to the American people.

I heard of reports on the Oregon National Guard currently training to fight a possible uprising. I’m going to paraphrase from an individual who has a friend within the Oregon N.G. and he was told, “you wouldn’t believe the amount of groups within the state that want to overthrow the government” and this was within the context of the current training sessions. The author also goes on to say that there isn’t a rubber tired vehicle sitting idle at an Oregon N.G. post. I haven’t heard about anything since, but it seems like with the way the economy is heading, and growing frustration from the populace to their leaders, that this report might very well be true and we could be faced with a revolution quite soon.
