Actually, not. If you watch until the end, this video promotes a new green industrial revolution, which looks nice on paper, but ultimately doesn’t represent a fundamental shift in our relationship with Gaia. Yes, it’s a kindler form of capitalism, but does it really respond in a way the situation is calling for? I admit that I don’t have all the answers, and certainly feel good about the overall quality of this short film because ocean acidity is an important, under-the-radar issue that is wrapped up in all the other ecological crisis we’re dealing with.
Nonetheless, I did have the following thought, so check me if I’m way off base: does the ocean have to be beautiful and awe-inspiring to deserve protection? I mean, is our culture at such a place that we cannot appreciate anything until its beautifully mediated? Just wondering.
